Solomon Airlines, together with the Ministry of Culture & Tourism and Tourism Solomons, has announced the date of the 2024 Fly Solomons Peace Marathon.
The national carrier has again secured the naming rights of the major event which this year will take place on Saturday, 12 October with a wide range of exciting prizes to be won including cash, airline tickets and valuable goods donated by sponsors.
The 2024 Fly Solomons Peace Marathon is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Culture & Tourism, Tourism Solomons, Travel Solomons and Solomon Airlines.
This year the event will comprise four events to suit runners of all capabilities including a 21K Half-Marathon, 10K and 5K races and a 2K fun run with all races hosted on the eastern side of Honiara.
Now firmly fixed in place as an annual event, the 2024 Fly Solomons Peace Marathon encourages and celebrates physical fitness throughout Solomon Islands, and also pays deep respect, honour and remembrance to those who lost their lives during WWII.
The 2024 marathon course will incorporate significant WWII landmarks including Hell’s Point, Alligator Creek, Bloody Ridge, and Fighter One. An added objective in 2024 will see the event utilised to raise awareness about the ongoing threat of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Honiara.
The program will also feature a memorial service to honour those who lost their lives during WWII.
Solomon Airlines said the 2024 Fly Solomons Peace Marathon is fast becoming a leading sporting event in the Pacific, attracting athletes and spectators from throughout the region and the Provinces to travel to Honiara to celebrate athletic excellence, history and peace.
The airline is partnering with Tourism Solomons and Travel Solomons to create and market special interest 2024 Fly Solomons Peace Marathon travel packages which will include airfares, accommodation, event registration and ground tours.
The packages will be available from all destinations across Solomon Airlines international network, designed to appeal to international runners, sports groups, spectators and tourists, including those who may wish to visit various significant WWII landmarks.
Tourism Solomons CEO (Acting), Dagnal Dereveke said Tourism Solomons is delighted to be once again involved in what has become a major fixture on the Solomon Islands annual calendar of events.
“While this event holds huge appeal for serious athletes, both within the Solomon Islands and from overseas, it is really pleasing to see how local people of all backgrounds, runners and non-runners alike, have taken the Fly Solomons Peace Marathon to heart and in doing so, helped firmly entrench this community event as a fun-filled fixture on their annual social calendar,” he said.
